Nigerian doctor and visual artist, Dr. Fola David, has etched his name in history by achieving a remarkable feat – breaking the Guinness World Record for the Largest Drawing By An Individual.
This incredible achievement comes after days and nights of tireless hard work and unwavering dedication. In an Instagram Post, Fola David mentioned how fatigue, aches in his legs, and his arm, and the glare from the sun bouncing off the canvas into his eyes were a big struggle as he took on the challenge every day.
Dr. David’s monumental artwork, titled “Unity in Diversity,” is a breathtaking 850-square-meter map of Nigeria. This artistic masterpiece is not only a record-breaker but also a powerful celebration of the country’s rich cultural tapestry. The artwork showcases the diverse ethnic groups of Nigeria through their unique attire, languages, art forms, and essence.
The ambitious project unfolded at Lagos’ Onikan Stadium, with Dr. David starting on July 16th, 2024. The artistic journey garnered widespread attention, with a wave of encouragement pouring in from celebrities and prominent figures. Celebrities like dancer Kaffy, Aproko Doctor, musician Laycon, and actress Hilda Baci (herself a former Guinness World Record holder for marathon cooking) all voiced their support. Political figures like Peter Obi and the Lagos commissioner for Youth and social justice Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende also joined the chorus of encouragement. This highlights the national pride Dr. David’s attempt has ignited.
Fola David’s dedication to the project has resonated with many Nigerians, inspiring admiration amongst young people and even children all over the country.
With the record now officially broken, Dr. David has not only achieved a personal triumph but also brought international recognition to Nigerian art and culture.
