The kiddies’ game circuit has been agog since the news filtered in. Questions have been asked. Panels may be set up to verify how this became possible. However, none of these will change the fact that eight-year-old student of Monidams Schools, Surulere, Olutokin Ibrahim, clinched the third position at the just concluded MTNmPulse-sponsored Lagos State Private School Spelling Bee!
Olutokin caught our attention since he got an automatic qualification to the finale of the spelling bee. With the level of ‘teeth-cracking’ words that over 1,470 students in Lagos went through within five months, all the students at the finale were from the senior and junior secondary school. Well, that was the case until Wednesday, November 13th, 2019, when an exception was made.
The young boy got the prize for third place in the competition! After hours of gruelling competition, Adeola Ademuwa Ifeoluwa From Chrisfield College, Ikorodu, and Joseph Temi from Wellspring College, Omole, were the winner and runner up respectively.
Olutokin joined fellow competitors and the first kid-CEO of MTN Nigeria, Adeola Ademuwa Ifeoluwa, at the company’s headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday, December 5, 2019. He shared that he enjoyed being the one to shake things up. “I’m happy that I was able to get here. It wasn’t easy but I knew if I focused, things would get better.” Colour us impressed!
The Spelling Bee was enabled by MTN mPulse, an exciting proposition from MTN created to equip students between the ages of 9 and 15 years with the resources they need to maximize their potential. The service offers kids (primary and secondary school students) an array of premium services and features such as free airtime on their birthday, free data for WhatsApp, practice questions for Common Entrance, WAEC, JSSCE and JAMB, Videos and lots of games. That’s wonderful!
