The United States flag was raised at the American embassy in Cuba today, marking the official commencement of diplomatic relations between the U.S and Cuba, after 54 years of estrangement.
U.S Secretary of State, John Kerry, became the first secretary of state to visit Cuba in 70 years. Following the raising of the flag in Havana, there is a renewed sense of hope that the embargoes placed by America on Cuba will be lifted in the coming months.
America and Cuba’s diplomatic falling out can be traced to the Cuban revolution of 1959 which brought socialist revolutionary, Fidel Castro to power.
