Manchester City football club have broken the British record today by signing 20 year old Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling for £49 million. The signing is also a club record signing and is the largest sum ever paid for a British player.
Liverpool fought hard to keep Sterling but after he refused to sign a new contract last season, it was clear he was prepared to leave the club. Nevertheless, Liverpool played hardball with Manchester, rejecting three offers until City matched their valuation of the player.
Sterling has revealed he left Liverpool because he wants to play for a club that has realistic chances of winning silverware. It is the second season in which Brendan Rodgers is losing an influential player.
