The 9/11 25th anniversary brought political leaders, victims’ families, and New Yorkers together at the National September 11 Memorial. The solemn ceremony in Lower Manhattan marked 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Family members gathered to honor loved ones killed during the attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Names of 2,983 victims were read aloud during the annual commemoration ceremony.

A moment of silence began at 8:46 a.m., marking the time Flight 11 struck the North Tower. Additional moments followed throughout the ceremony, reflecting the devastating sequence of attacks that morning.

For the first time, organizers included another moment honoring people who later died from 9/11-related illnesses. Vice President JD Vance joined family members and four former presidents at Ground Zero for the remembrance.

Across the country, communities also gathered to remember nearly 3,000 people killed during the attacks. At the Memorial, the ceremony also highlighted stories of courage, compassion, unity, and service.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum continues educating younger generations about the attacks and their lasting consequences. This year’s anniversary carries particular significance because many young Americans have no personal memory of September 11. Organizers say roughly 100 million Americans are now too young to remember the attacks.

Meanwhile, health consequences continue affecting survivors and first responders decades after the tragedy. The New York Fire Department says more than 600 firefighters have died from illnesses connected to the attacks.

Beyond the ceremony, New York continues preserving memories through education, exhibitions, tributes, and community programs. Tonight, the Tribute in Light will illuminate Lower Manhattan during a special anniversary broadcast.
