After an incredible season, Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen simply ran out of steam. Lookman, who doubled the lead with a spectacular curling effort 14 minutes later, opened the scoring with a back-post finish on minute 12.
Ademola Lookman became the first player to ever score a hat-trick in a Europa League final when he completed his historic treble with a forceful left-footed shot that sailed into the top corner.
Reacting to his hat-trick after the match, Lookman said, “This is one of the best nights of my life. Amazing performance from the team. We did it! We’ve got to celebrate. We made history tonight”.
Bayer Leverkusen’s hope of winning a treble after winning their first Bundesliga title with ease might have been dashed, however, they can still secure a domestic double if they defeat Kaiserslautern in the German Cup on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
This was an overdue victory and the first significant trophy in Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s lengthy tenure.
Ademola Lookman is one of the favourites for the prestigious CAF Player of the Year 2024.
