The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya on breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest time playing chess without losing a game.
Sanwo-Olu praised Tunde Onakoya in a message published on his X account on Saturday for shattering the world record for the longest chess marathon in Times Square, New York.
The governor wrote, “Congratulations to chess master, Tunde Onakoya, on breaking the world chess marathon record in Times Square, New York. Your journey from Lagos, Nigeria to global recognition embodies the spirit of our great city”.
The record set by Norwegian gamers Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018 for 56 hours and nine minutes of playing chess without losing a game was shattered by Tunde Onakoya.
Onakoya’s foundation, ‘Chess in Slums Africa’ gave an update on the chess master’s progress. They wrote, “60 Hours for those who dare to dream! 60 Hours for the millions of children who have been told to abandon their dreams!”.
According to Tunde Onakoya, his goal was to generate money and awareness to give impoverished children in Africa access to education.
