37-year-old Omobayo Godwin has been sworn in as the new deputy governor of Edo State by Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.
Governor Godwin Obaseki appointed Omobayo as soon as Philip Shaibu was impeached on Monday.
Recall that on Monday, April 8, 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly impeached Comrade Philip Shaibu, the beleaguered deputy governor.
At the end of a months-long political suspense between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Shaibu, the Edo State Assembly impeached Shaibu.
Following Shaibu’s impeachment, the Assembly adopted the report of the seven-member investigative panel it had formed to examine his alleged misbehaviour.
The impeachment proceedings culminated in a dramatic vote that saw Shaibu ousted from his position. The proceedings were initiated earlier this week. A few hours later, Omobayo Godwins was sworn in to replace Shaibu.
Meanwhile, reacting to his impeachment in a video posted on his official X(formerly known as Twitter) account, Philip Shaibu says his impeachment is a threat to the nation’s democracy and believes it was a “flagrant abuse of power” by the Edo State House of Assembly.
