Planning Minister Judith Suminwa-Tuluka has been named the first female prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by President Felix Tshisekedi.
The news was declared one month after Lukonde, who had held the position for three years, announced his resignation as prime minister. Felix Tshisekedi, the president of the African nation, carried out a campaign pledge by appointing Tuluka.
She becomes prime minister and replaces Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde After Tshisekedi’s overwhelming reelection as president on December 20.
After Tshisekedi was sworn in for a second term in January, a protracted hunt for a majority coalition in the National Assembly began. This was a necessary step before a prime minister could be chosen and a government could be established.
Judith Suminwa-Tuluka declared that her government “will work for peace and the development of the country” and that she is “aware of the great responsibility” that he has been given after making the declaration, according to Aljazeera.
