Palm Sunday is the last Sunday before Easter Sunday in the Catholic Lent Calendar.
This particular Sunday is set aside to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, with his followers laying their clothes and palms on the ground for the donkey carrying Jesus to walk on.
Catholic faithful all over the world replicate this event by bearing palms, going on a procession, and proclaiming the word on the street.
This celebration in Nigeria is always so beautiful to watch. However, what is more fun is the different categories of Catholics you can find on this special day.
We have made a list of these different types of people and what to always expect from them on Palm Sunday.
Let’s crack you up a bit:
The Clueless Catholics
These ones have no idea why this day even exists. Don’t get us wrong, they are Catholics, but if you ask them what Palm Sunday represents? We would not advise you to hold your breath till you get an answer. They just wake up on that fateful morning, dress up their best, get their palms, and follow the crowd!
The ‘Palm-less’ Catholics
These ones were probably so lost in thought that they forgot the one prop they needed for the day; an actual Palm! They are a bit spiritual because they know what the day represents, but where do they get Palm on Sunday Morning? They run helter-skelter until they have no choice but to beg for some Palm from someone at the procession ground.
The Nonchalant Catholics
These ones are a different breed because they fell off the Lent train right after Ash Wednesday. They did not even know that the Lenten Season was coming to an end, until they probably heard their neighbor or friend saying “Ah, Sunday is Palm Sunday ooo”. After attending the Sunday mass for Palm Sunday, they go back to their holes again until Easter Sunday.
The Overly Excited Catholics
These ones are just a delight to watch on that day. From the beginning of the procession till the end, they dance and shout with their hands in the air. You could even mistake them for one of the disciples who were present on the actual day Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem.
The Devoted Catholics
These are the ones your parents always ask you to emulate. From the first day of Lent, they can tell you the daily activities and what they symbolize. You can never catch them ‘unfresh’. It’s as if there’s a ‘Most devoted Catholic’ competition going on out there that nobody informed you about. But you see my dear reader, your bad character won’t let you be in this group. *inserts Pawpaw’s sticker*
There you have it! We’re sure you cracked up reading this and it definitely was relatable!
