Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, faced disappointment at the 66th Grammy Awards, falling short in all three nominated categories: Best Global Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best African Music Performance.
The night witnessed similar outcomes for other Nigerian nominees—Burna Boy, Olamide, Ayra Starr, and Asake—all leaving empty-handed.
On a brighter note, South Africa’s Tyla clinched her inaugural Grammy Award by triumphing in the Best Global Music Performance category with her breakthrough hit ‘Water,’ surpassing a formidable lineup of Nigerian contenders, including Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Ayra Starr.
Among the early 2024 Grammy winners were Barbie the Album for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Oppenheimer for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. The Beatles secured their first Grammy in nearly three decades, claiming Best Music Video for “I’m Only Sleeping.”
Chris Stapleton scooped both Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “White Horse,” while Killer Mike dominated the rap categories with wins for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” along with Best Rap Album for “Michael.”
