The highest grossing Nollywood movie “A Tribe Called Judah” produced by Funke Akindele is about the heartfelt journey of a low to middle-income Nigerian family, merging drama, comedy, and suspense with finesse.
The movie shines in its narrative, revealing pivotal characters during the opening act, while beautifully portraying the family’s unity and togetherness. It portrays the life of a single mother of five sons all from different fathers. Jedidah Judah, the mother, owns a maruwa business which she uses to fend for her family. In one of the film’s scenes, we see Jedidah selling one of her maruwa to bail her son Shina Judah out of jail. This is an act of love and motherhood that permeates all through the film.
The first son Emeka Judah(Jide Kene) is a sales representative at a mall; raised by his grandmother, he is a responsible child and works hard to take care of the family. Adamu Judah( Uzee Usman), the second son, is a security guard at a mall and he also helps in supporting Emeka in taking care of the family. The third son, Shina Judah (Tobi Makinde )is a reckless street agbero, he’s somewhat a problematic child of Jedidah. The fourth son, Pere Judah (Timini Egbuson)is a pickpocket thief who often brings trouble to the family. The fifth child which is the last born, Ejiro Judah (Olumide Oworu),is a painter and engages in ridiculous acts to raise money with his girlfriend Testimony.
Produced by Funke Akindele, the film is Nollywood Highest highest-grossing film of 2023 making over 400 million naira from the cinemas in 12 days as of the time of this review.
What made the film impressive were the cast members. Each actor brought their role to life and watching them play each role effectively made the impression of them being made for that particular character/role.
