In a recent news development, Nwakaego Okoye, a female TikTok user, has been sentenced to three years in prison for cyberstalking Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus. The ruling was handed down by Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday.
Nwakaego pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of cyberstalking, leading to her conviction. However, considering her remorse, Justice Oweibo offered her an alternative to paying a fine of N150,000 instead of serving jail time.
The charge against Nwakaego stated that she, along with an accomplice named Chimabia (who is currently at large), conspired to commit the offence between December 2022 and July 2023 in Lagos. The act of cyberstalking violates Sections 24(1)(b)(2)(a)(c) and 27 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015.
Nwakaego Okoye was arrested for making defamatory statements against actress Eniola Badmus. In a video clip, she apologized for her actions and confessed that she defamed the actress because her friend, Fortune Ibe, promised to pay her N200,000. Okoye stated that she needed the money to pay her house rent, which drove her to act in such a manner.
