The refereeing bodies in the English Premier League (EPL) created guidelines for English Football League match officials to enable players religiously perform their fast during the holy period of Ramadan.
The Premier League has given guidelines to match officials concerning fasting during the Ramadan period which started on the 22nd of March, 2023, and will end on the 21st of April, 2023.
Players are allowed to break their fast by taking liquids, supplements, or energy gels on the touchline of the pitch display pause play.
Players who are fasting are to be identified by the referee before kick-off and an agreement of estimated time foreplay pausing play should be clearly stated before the game.
In 2021, a match between Leicester City and Crystal Palace was halted by referee Graham Scott so Wesley Fofana and Cheikhou Kouyate could break their fast after sunset.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Chelsea’s N’Golo, Kante, and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez are among players who are expected to stay away from eating and drinking during daylight hours.
