The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has spoken out against the Senate’s consideration of the Electricity Bill.
The NGF is particularly critical of a provision that empowers the power minister to lead all relevant agencies, a position that the power minister says: “it requires further strengthening.
“While a single Electric Power Sector Reform Act may have been useful as a catalyst for the sector in the early years of the Fourth Republic, the States have all come of age, literally and metaphorically, and the arrangements must change in a way that accepts and respects the States’ maturity in electricity matters; a reality that this Senate Electricity Bill does not recognize and take account of, but at best only pays cursory lip service to.”

As a result, it called for close collaboration among the NGF, the National Assembly, and the Federal Executive in charting a new and fruitful path toward bringing energy security to our country.
