Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema have won the Professional Footballers’ Association players of the year awards for the 2018/2019 season.
Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Georgia Stanley won the young player of the year awards respectively.
Virgil van Dijk saw off competition from city’s Sterling to take home the award after a brilliant season at Liverpool after moving to the club for 75 million pounds from Southampton a little over a year ago. He has also helped Liverpool concede a meagre 20 league goals in 36 games and 17 clean sheets.
Virgil van Dijk also becomes only the fifth defender to receive the award after Norman Hunter, Colin Todd, Gary Pallister, Paul McGrath and John Terry.
“It’s pretty difficult to put into words.” He said. “I think it’s the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted as the player of the year by the players you play against every week. It’s special. I’m very honoured to receive it.”
Fellow Netherlands player, Vivianne Miedema won the women’s award after helping Arsenal win the title.
