Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the grand Imam of the Egypt’s famous Al-Azhar institution has called polygamy an injustice.
In a quote published on Twitter on Friday, the Imam said “Polygamy is often an injustice to women and children,”
Speaking at a weekly Friday television show, the popular cleric reaffirmed the notion and said: “Those who say that marriage must be polygamous are all wrong”.
He also insisted that, according to the Quran, a man can only have multiple wives if he is able to abide by the law of fairness.
Men “must obey conditions of fairness — and if there is not fairness it is forbidden to have multiple wives” he said.
While he clarafied that he wasn’t calling for the abolishment of polygamy, he said the way women’s issues are discussed must be revamped.
“Women represent half of society, if we don’t care for them it’s like we are walking on one foot only,”
