Theresa May has won the backing of her party to stay on as Prime Minister.
It wasn’t smooth sailing though as more than a third of Conservative MP’s voted against her.
She won the confidence vote by 200 votes to 117 on Wednesday night after a rift in her party over Brexit.
After the vote May said her party have a renewed mandate to go ahead with the Brexit deal “that people voted for, bringing the country back together and building a Britain that truly works for everyone”
“I am pleased to have received the backing of my colleagues in tonight’s ballot,” she said.
“Whilst I am grateful for that support, a significant number of colleagues did cast a vote against me and I have listened to what they said.”
She also urgeed MPs across the board to cooperate to deliver Brexit in the interest of the nation.
She also promised to would step down as the leader of the party before the next scheduled elections in 2022, but refused to state the date she would hand over.
Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn has said “Tonight’s vote makes no difference to the lives of our people,”, He also asked her to bring the deal to the House of Commons next week so that “parliament can take back control.”
“Theresa May has lost her majority in Parliament, her government is in chaos and she’s unable to deliver a Brexit deal that works for the country.” He added.
If May had lost the no-confidence vote, she would have been expected to stand down as the leader of the party and also vacate her role as Prime Minister.
