Assata Shakur has become a pioneer in a most infamous sense.
On Thursday, the former Black Liberation Army member, who has been one of America’s most high-profile fugitives for nearly 40 years, became the first woman to be placed on the FBI’s list of most-wanted terrorists. Shakur (née Joanne Chesimard) was convicted in 1977 in the shooting death of Werner Foerster, a New Jersey state trooper, four years earlier.
She escaped from prison in 1979, eventually making her way to Cuba, where the government there has sheltered her since. Authorities said the bounty for her capture would be doubled to $2 million
