Scientists have made a fresh breakthrough in their quest to crack the ‘Enigma Code’ of the common cold which could finally put an end to coughs and sneezes, according to Express UK.

Scientists have made a fresh breakthrough in their quest to crack the ‘Enigma Code’ of cold
Researchers at the Universities of York, Leeds, and Helsinki having been working together to try and discover what causes the world’s most common ailment affecting two billion people every year.

And they believe they have unearthed the workings of a ‘hidden code’ within a virus that causes the common cold, polio, and hand, foot and mouth disease.

The work builds on a discovery made in 2015 when the scientists found that jamming the code can disrupt the virus assembly and stop it functioning.

They have now found that the details of the decoding mechanism appear identical in all strains of the virus, potentially allowing a single drug to treat them all rather than relying on individual vaccines.

The team is now working to screen for potential anti-viral drugs that target this decoding mechanism and believe a cure could be found within a decade.
