In what proved to be the ultimate upset of the Australian Open, Angelique Kerber beat Serena Williams to win the Australian Open.
Having beaten Sharapova and Radwanska to reach the finals, it was understandable that 34 year old Serena was the overwhelming favorite.
The seventh seeded German proved to be more than a match for Serena, winning the final 6-4 3-6 6-4 at Melbourne Park.
Serena William’s loss means she misses out on the opportunity to tie Graff’s record of 22 singles Open titles.
