Ivory Coast’s incumbent president, Alassane Ouattara has won a reeelction bid by a landslide, polling 83.66% of votes cast.
Although voter turnout was just about 54%, Alassane Ouattara avoided a run off by comprehensively defeating his closest opponent Pascal Affi N’Guessan of the Ivorian Popular Front political party who polled just 9% of votes cast.
Alassane Ouattara became President in 2010 following a closely contested election in which a run-off saw Laurent Gbagbo losing and refusing to hand over power. The 2010 election led to violence and the death of over 3,000 people before Gbagbo was arrested in 2011.
Alassane Ouattara was touted as the front runner in this year’s election as his first term saw considerable economic improvement in Ivory Coast.
