The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed a new law, which has been termed as progressive in the Zimbabwe’s education sector.
Amidst other developments introduced into the education sector, one notable development as it relates to the rights of a girl child is that the law henceforth bars government schools from excluding pregnant girls from schools. In other words, pregnancy will no longer be a bar to the girl-child education in Zimbabwe.
Furthermore, the new law prohibits teachers from caning students and at the same time prohibits schools from excluding students from school based on non-payment of school fees. This is a new development in Africa, and we look forward to other African countries adopting this law in furtherance of the girl-child education.
