Trump Announces 10% Global Tariff After Supreme Court Ruling, Shaking Up Trade

Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a 10 percent tariff on imports from every country, a move that comes shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his previous tariff strategy. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect very soon, and the announcement has sparked fresh debate about global trade and economic relations.ย

In a post on his social platform, Trump said he had signed a โ€œglobal 10 percent tariff on all countries,โ€ describing it as an important step for Americaโ€™s economic interests. According to available reports, this new tariff will apply to virtually all foreign imports and become effective almost immediately.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated sweeping tariffs that Trump had previously imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court ruled that the former president did not have the authority under that law to levy broad, unilateral duties on imports from multiple countries without explicit approval from Congress.

In response to that setback, Trump pivoted to other statutory powers to maintain tariffs, announcing the 10 percent global duty under a different legal framework. White House officials told reporters that this tariff will stay in place until another legal authority replaces it or Congress intervenes, emphasising that global trading partners are expected to respect existing U.S. trade agreements even as the new duty takes effect.

If fully implemented, the new tariff will affect imports from virtually every country that trades with the United States. Experts say such a blanket duty could make goods from the U.S. market more expensive abroad and prompt other countries to respond with their own tariffs, potentially escalating a broader trade conflict. Economists point out that global tariffs tend to shift costs to consumers and exporters alike, often reducing international trade flows and raising prices for everyday products.

Earlier versions of Trumpโ€™s tariff plan included higher levies on specific countries based on perceived trade imbalances. In the past, China faced tariffs above 30 percent, while some European nations were subject to around 20 percent duties, and a baseline 10 percent tariff applied broadly. Although the Supreme Court decision invalidated those earlier measures, the ongoing 10 percent duty represents a continuation of Americaโ€™s more protectionist trade posture.

The announcement has already drawn responses from global leaders and economic analysts, who warn that expansive tariffs could slow economic growth, disrupt supply chains and strain international relations. Nations that rely heavily on exports to the U.S. market may feel the effects most strongly, especially if the tariffs lead to higher costs for producers and consumers. Some analysts also note that smaller economies could be disproportionately affected by these duties.

Despite the legal challenges and political debate, the move underscores continued tensions over trade policy and international economic strategy. As the tariffs go into effect, governments, businesses and investors will be watching closely to see how global markets respond and whether diplomatic negotiations can mitigate potential fallout.
