Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has offered a clarification regarding her recent remark about being open to becoming a second wife, emphasising that her comment was not a declaration of intent but rather an expression of past emotional hurt.
During an episode of the American podcast “Air Service,” the 45-year-old singer said she found that many of the eligible men approaching her were either already married or in their fifties. She said, “If I meet somebody who can really marry me, they are either in their 50s or already married. So I don’t know. Maybe I can be a second wife. I think so. I could be a second wife.”
Following a flurry of media coverage and social-media reaction, Tiwa released a video in which she said the statement was misinterpreted. She clarified that she has no genuine interest in polygamy and that her remarks were derived from frustration after past relationship experiences. “I was a first wife, where did that get me? I got married as the only wife, but here we are,” she said, adding, “It’s not my choice, though. I don’t want to.”
Tiwa explained that her previous marriage, which ended amid public scrutiny, taught her that being the only wife did not guarantee satisfaction or stability. In that context, she stated, contributed to what she described as a moment of vulnerability rather than a planned lifestyle shift.
In her follow-up remarks, she stressed that her creative choice of words was not meant to encourage or endorse polygamy. Instead, she said, it was a reflection of her inner emotional landscape. Some media outlets reporting the episode interpreted her comment as open acceptance of polygamy, which she now says misses the point of her message.
The debate stirred on social platforms after Tiwa’s initial comment went viral, sparking discussions around polygamy, modern relationships, and the pressures faced by public figures navigating personal remarks. In clarifying her position, Tiwa reiterated that she remains focused on authenticity rather than media soundbites.
The singer’s clarification appears to have shifted the narrative away from controversy and back to personal reflection and emotional reality topics that continue to resonate with fans and followers both in Nigeria and abroad.
