“There’s a Joy in Going Solo”: Mr. P of PSquare Urges Fans To Respect His Decision

Nigerian music star Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr. P of the iconic duo PSquare, has spoken candidly about the group’s decision to pursue solo careers.

In a recent interview, he emphasised the personal fulfilment that comes with going solo and urged fans to respect their choice, admitting. He said,

“There’s a joy that comes with going solo. Please respect our decisions. We’ve tried it, it’s not working…”

His words have reignited conversations about the group’s past breakups and the challenges of maintaining creative partnerships in the spotlight.

The breakup of PSquare, one of Africa’s most iconic music duos, stemmed from a mix of deep-rooted family tensions, creative differences, and personal conflicts.

A major issue was their strained relationship with their elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye, whom Peter felt favoured Paul and mismanaged the group.

Creative disagreements also emerged, with Peter leaning toward pop sounds while Paul stuck to more traditional R&B. Peter expressed feeling overshadowed and unappreciated, which fueled the desire to go solo.

Public spats and failed reconciliation attempts further widened the divide, ultimately leading to their split despite efforts to reunite in later years.
