Seyi Law Apologises After ‘Nigeria Is Safer Now’ Remark Sparks Backlash

Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has issued a public apology following widespread criticism over his recent comment suggesting that Nigeria is safer now than it was a decade ago.

The controversy began after the comedian appeared on The Honest Bunch podcast, where he questioned whether kidnappings were a new occurrence and implied that the country’s security situation had improved compared to 10 years ago. His remarks quickly triggered backlash on social media, with many Nigerians describing the statement as insensitive, particularly in light of ongoing security challenges across parts of the country.

In an apology video shared online, Seyi Law admitted that his comment was poorly framed and did not adequately consider the experiences of victims and their families.

“I’m not someone who is too proud to apologise when I make a mistake,” he said. “If my words came across as dismissive of people’s pain, then I sincerely apologise.”

The comedian acknowledged that although he did not intend to minimise the suffering of those affected by kidnappings and insecurity, he now understands why many people felt hurt by his comment.

He stated that his attempt to compare past and present security conditions was not meant to invalidate current concerns but admitted that the delivery was insensitive. According to him, people who have lost loved ones or experienced trauma firsthand deserved more empathy.

Seyi Law also referenced a previous moment on the same podcast where he immediately apologised after incorrectly stating the political party affiliation of Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State. He said that incident showed he is willing to publicly correct himself when wrong.

“I have always taken responsibility when I make mistakes,” he added.

The apology has generated mixed reactions. While some Nigerians commended him for owning up to his mistake, others maintained that public figures must exercise greater caution when speaking on sensitive national issues, especially matters involving security and loss of life.

Security concerns remain a major topic of discussion in Nigeria, with citizens frequently voicing worries about kidnappings and other crimes in various regions. Many online users stressed that comparisons across decades do little to comfort families currently dealing with insecurity.

In closing, Seyi Law reiterated his regret and assured the public that he remains committed to using his platform responsibly. He also stated that he would continue engaging public officials and stakeholders in conversations about improving security nationwide.

The apology marks a notable shift in tone from his earlier remarks, as the comedian seeks to mend ties with audiences who felt offended by his comments.
