In a recent appearance on the Ladders Podcast, British YouTuber and former fiancé of Nigerian DJ and entrepreneur DJ Cuppy (real name Florence Otedola) made startling allegations about her attitude toward Nigerians. According to British boxer and influencer Ryan Taylor, she once told him she “didn’t like people from her country” and even went so far as to discourage him from hiring fellow Nigerians in his business.

Taylor recalled that during their time together, Cuppy would allegedly question his decision to have Nigerian staff. “Is it weird that I told you she didn’t like Nigerians? She came into my business and didn’t even want Nigerian staff,” he said on the podcast. He added that the motive, as he perceived it, was tied to how people would approach her in public: “We used to walk in the mall and people would run from their counters to ask her for money,” he claimed.
The couple’s engagement in November 2022 had been widely celebrated, but by mid-2023 they had unfollowed each other on social media, signalling a split that came without much public explanation. Taylor, reflecting on the relationship, stated: “Everything happens for a reason … No regrets, lesson learned.”

These statements have triggered significant online reaction. Many Nigerians expressed disappointment at the idea that a popular Nigerian figure might hold such views about her own countrymen. Some questioned whether Cuppy had responded or denied the allegation; as yet, there appears to be no detailed public rebuttal from her side.
It is important to note that these are allegations made by Taylor during a podcast interview; no legal proceedings or formal investigations have been reported. Nonetheless, given DJ Cuppy’s high profile and the sensitivity of issues around national identity and employment, the claims carry potential cultural and reputational weight.
As the story continues to develop, outlets will likely seek a response from DJ Cuppy and review how such remarks may reflect broader issues in workplace dynamics, national loyalty, and celebrity influence in Nigeria’s entertainment and business sectors.
