Remembering Chief Adeyemi Afolayan (Adelove): A Pillar of Yoruba Theatre and Nigerian Cinema

Three decades after his passing, the name Chief Adeyemi Josiah Akano Afolayan, popularly known as Adelove, remains firmly etched in the history of Nigerian theatre and indigenous cinema. His life and work continue to represent a defining era in Yoruba artistic expression and storytelling.

Chief Afolayan was a distinguished actor, filmmaker, playwright, and cultural advocate whose contributions laid a solid foundation for Yoruba theatre and film. At a time when indigenous narratives struggled for visibility, he championed stories rooted in culture, tradition, morality, and social values. His works not only entertained but also educated audiences, reinforcing the importance of cultural identity through drama.

His legacy is also preserved through his family. Reflecting on his enduring impact, his daughter Moji Afolayan Olayiwola wrote:โ€œ30 years ago today, my father Chief Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan (Adelove). You will forever be in our remembrance.โ€

Similarly, his son, renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, noted:โ€œItโ€™s been 29 years since our father Adeyemi Josiah Akano Afolayan passed away. We miss you, but your legacy continues.โ€

Indeed, Chief Adeyemi Afolayanโ€™s legacy enduresโ€”not only through his descendants but through the continued relevance of Yoruba theatre, the preservation of indigenous narratives, and the ongoing growth of Nigerian cinema.

Though he departed this world many years ago, his contributions remain timeless. His work continues to inspire, educate, and remind us of the power of culture-driven storytelling.

He was succeeded by 4 sons and 1 daughter: Aremu Afolayan (Son), Kunle Afolayan (Son), Tayo Afolayan (Son), Gabriel Afolayan (Son), and Moji Afolayan (Daughter).

Chief Adeyemi Afolayan (Adelove) will forever be remembered as a pioneer, a cultural icon, and a guardian of Yoruba artistic heritage.
