Rasheed Ladoja Crowned as 44th Olubadan in Grand Ceremony

Just yesterday morning, Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja was formally crowned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking a new chapter in the cultural history of Ibadan. The event took place at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, drawing dignitaries, traditional rulers, top political figures and hundreds of curious residents.

Former Governor Ladoja, who turns 81 this month, ascended the throne following the death of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away earlier in July 2025.  His installation caps a long traditional progression through the Ibadan chieftaincy ranks.

Guests from across Nigeria converged on Ibadan for the occasion. Among those in attendance were the Sultan of Sokoto, the Alaafin of Oyo, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, as well as the Oluwo of Iwo and other prominent monarchs.  Political heavyweights were also present, including ex-governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, and the Deputy Governor of Oyo State.  The presence of President Bola Tinubu was expected.

A notable moment in the ceremony was when the Afobaje of Ibadanland, Chief Waheed Popoola, placed akoko leaves on Ladojaโ€™s head; this is one of the traditional rites associated with assuming the Olubadan title.  The coronation also featured cultural displays and performances, including music from the Oyo State cultural troupe and Fuji artist Taye Currency.

In the crowd, political supporters and admirers cheered as the new monarch took his place. Many spoke of how his prior career in politics serving as governor and senator adds weight to his role as a traditional leader.

While the main formalities took place this yesterday, final installation rites are scheduled to follow at the Ose Meji House, in line with customary Ibadan traditions.
