Inter Milan star Manuel Akanji has expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage despite building his professional football career in Switzerland. The 29-year-old defender, born to a Nigerian father and Swiss mother, revealed in a recent interview with Inter TV that his African roots remain a central part of his identity.

Akanji, who now plays in Italyโs Serie A, spoke openly about the tattoo on his left arm which features an eagle and a football. He explained that the image is a tribute to Nigeriaโs Super Eagles, the national team that represents his fatherโs homeland. โThis is the eagle, from the Nigerian national team, with the football under it. It is something I carry with me,โ he said.
Although Akanji chose to represent Switzerland on the international stage, he made it clear that the decision never lessened his bond with Nigeria. โObviously, I play for the Swiss national team, but I am still really proud of being Nigerian. I could only make one decision, but they are still with me all the way,โ he added.
The defender recalled visiting Nigeria as a child, explaining that he travelled there three or four times with his family. Those trips, he said, gave him a lasting connection to the culture. However, due to his football schedule and the rainy season that coincides with his off-time, he has not been able to return recently.
Life at Inter Milan
Since joining Inter Milan from Manchester City, Akanji has quickly settled into the squad. He described his first game at the San Siro as unforgettable, noting that even before signing for the club, he admired Inter. He also revealed that the first football shirt he ever owned belonged to Italian striker Christian Vieri, one of Interโs greats.
Akanji has continued to impress with his defensive strength and leadership. His reflections on both his professional journey and his Nigerian background have resonated with fans, showing how personal identity remains important for footballers on the global stage.
