In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President encouraged eligible voters to participate confidently in the democratic process, stressing that elections are strongest when conducted in an atmosphere of calm, tolerance and mutual respect.

President Tinubuโ€™s remarks come ahead of polls scheduled for 21 February 2026. The Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission or INEC) will conduct area council elections across the six area councils of the FCT alongside bye-elections in specific constituencies of Rivers and Kano states.ย

Tinubu urged voters to turn out without fear and reminded political parties, candidates and their supporters to avoid violence, inflammatory rhetoric and any actions that could undermine the credibility of the electoral process. He emphasised that democracy thrives when citizens respect each other and the rules governing elections.

He also called on security agencies to act with restraint and professionalism, warning against high-handedness, intimidation or conduct that might erode public confidence or disenfranchise voters. According to the President, security personnel should focus on protecting lives, property and the sanctity of the ballot.

The President asked INEC to ensure timely voter accreditation, a smooth voting process, accurate collation of results and prompt transmission in accordance with the newly signed Electoral Act 2026. These reforms are intended to strengthen public trust in the conduct of elections across the country.

In his statement, Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Governmentโ€™s commitment to supporting institutions responsible for delivering free, fair and credible elections. He expressed confidence that the polls in FCT, Rivers and Kano would reflect the will of the people and further strengthen Nigeriaโ€™s democratic journey.

The Presidentโ€™s appeal comes amid heightened public attention on local democratic processes and follows broader reforms aimed at improving electoral credibility in Nigeria.
