The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing the misuse of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s name and office by unprofessional officers engaged in fraudulent practices.
Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi issued a statement on Saturday expressing concern over the actions of certain officers that tarnish the reputation of the police and erode public trust.
“The Nigeria Police Force is deeply troubled by the ongoing unprofessional conduct of a few officers, which compromises the integrity and standards of the Force,” the statement read.
Adejobi highlighted the fraudulent exploitation of the Inspector-General’s name to carry out illegal acts, noting that such practices mislead victims into believing the IG supports these activities.
This, he said, discourages victims from reporting the incidents to higher authorities.
“Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary measures, some officers continue to engage in these disgraceful acts that undermine public confidence in the police,” he said.
The FPRO urged members of the public to remain cautious and report any suspicious behavior or misconduct by police officers to relevant authorities, such as the Complaint Response Units in their states or the Commissioner of Police.
“Citizens should exercise caution when dealing with individuals claiming affiliations with the IG or senior officers, particularly if these claims are aimed at seeking undue influence or favors,” Adejobi advised.
This warning follows a similar alert in October, where the Nigeria Police Force cautioned against exploiting the IG’s name or office to intimidate others.
