Nigerian singer Orezi has shared a video on social media showing US officials discussing the murder of Deborah Samuel Yakubu and demanding urgent reforms. He explained that Nigeria should be added to the “Country of Concern” list because of rising impunity and weak human-rights protection.
In his post, Orezi wrote, “The recklessness needs to stop.” He also shared footage of international officials reviewing Nigeria’s rights record after Deborah’s tragic lynching in Sokoto State in 2022.
The video features members of Christian Solidarity International warning about recurring mob killings and poor justice delivery. Moreover, they criticised the US government for removing Nigeria from its “Countries of Particular Concern” list, arguing that insecurity and injustice still prevail across several regions.
Orezi Urges Accountability
Reacting to the footage, Orezi insisted that awareness alone cannot bring real change. Therefore, he called on the government and security agencies to act decisively against religious and communal violence. In addition, he stressed that accountability and legal reforms must remain central to achieving lasting peace.
Public and Online Reactions
Meanwhile, Orezi’s post spread quickly across social media. Many Nigerians agreed that Deborah’s death highlights deep flaws in the country’s justice system. Others, however, praised the artist for using his platform to demand reform. Consequently, his voice added emotion and urgency to a national conversation on human rights.
Furthermore, the petition to place Nigeria on an international watch-list forms part of a growing movement led by churches, activists, and civil society groups. These organisations continue to track violence linked to religion and ethnicity. They also argue that unchecked impunity only fuels more attacks and divisions within communities.
Celebrities Driving Social Change
For artists like Orezi, speaking out on human rights signals a new phase of celebrity activism in Nigeria. More entertainers are now using their influence to discuss governance, justice, and equality — topics once dominated by politicians and advocates.
As conversations continue, Nigerians are watching how the government will respond. If leaders take firm action, Deborah Samuel’s death could inspire lasting reform. However, without accountability, it may simply fade into yet another forgotten tragedy.
