Oluremi Tinubu Launches Empowerment Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities in Anambra

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a new empowerment programme aimed at supporting persons living with disabilities in Anambra State. The programme falls under the Renewed Hope Initiative, her nationwide social investment project designed to strengthen economic independence for vulnerable groups. The launch aligns with activities marking the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is part of a coordinated rollout across the country.

The event in Anambra took place at the Light House in Awka, where beneficiaries gathered to receive support presented in the name of the First Lady. Although Senator Oluremi Tinubu was not physically present, her speech was delivered by the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, who noted the importance of creating opportunities for people living with disabilities to thrive economically. Verified reports show that the programme is running simultaneously in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, each with 250 selected beneficiaries.

Grant support for business growth

During the launch, 250 persons living with disabilities in Anambra were given business recapitalisation grants of N200,000 each. According to the First Lady’s message, the grants are designed to help beneficiaries either expand small businesses they already operate or secure the capital needed to stabilise them. The programme focuses on people who use small businesses to support themselves and their families and who need financial assistance to remain sustainable in a challenging economic climate.

The First Lady explained that the Renewed Hope Initiative reflects her commitment to equity, dignity and inclusion. She highlighted that persons living with disabilities often face systemic challenges that restrict their access to opportunities available to others. By assisting them with direct financial support, the programme aims to give them a stronger chance to compete economically. The grants may be used for working capital, equipment purchase or stock replenishment depending on each person’s business needs.

In her address, she encouraged beneficiaries to make use of the funds responsibly and expressed confidence that the support would help them secure a better standard of living. Her message also appreciated the efforts of disability groups, community leaders and state government representatives who continue to advocate for inclusiveness in social development programmes.

The Anambra State Government welcomed the initiative and described it as a significant boost to ongoing efforts aimed at supporting vulnerable residents. Officials noted that the grant will make a meaningful difference for beneficiaries who typically do not have access to formal lending or traditional business financing structures.

Nationwide rollout continues

The disability empowerment programme is also being implemented in several other states including Lagos, Zamfara, Delta and Abia. Verified reports confirm that the model remains consistent across states, with 250 persons living with disabilities benefiting in each location. The Renewed Hope Initiative plans to sustain these social investment programmes throughout the year and expand them into related areas such as training support, food outreach and agricultural empowerment.

As the programme gains momentum, it continues to attract positive reactions from disability advocates who believe financial empowerment remains one of the most direct ways to improve the lives of people living with disabilities. The First Lady noted in her speech that every Nigerian deserves the opportunity to participate meaningfully in economic activities regardless of physical limitations.

The Anambra launch ended with presentations to beneficiaries and words of appreciation from local disability organisations. With the nationwide programme still unfolding, many will be watching to see how the Renewed Hope Initiative continues to drive support for those who need it most.
