NIGERIA’S JUSTICE SYSTEM ON RAPE, A CALL FOR REVIEW

Rape is a non consensual sexual intercourse, that occurs by force, intimidation or threat and is without the explicit consent of the recipient. Rape and sexual assault are serious crimes against the dignity and sexual rights of women and girls. It is evil and should really be frowned at by the Nigeria Justice System.

However, it is saddening that in spite of the prevalence of rape and sexual violence, the Nigeria Justice System consists of poor and extinct laws that do not address the issue of rape properly.

Therefore there is a need to review the Criminal Code and prescribe stringent punishment for the offence of rape. When this is done, the society would be able to understand the gravity of the offence and desist from it as much as possible.
