The Super Eagles of Nigeria return to action tonight as they lock horns with Mozambique in the Round of 16 of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
The highly anticipated encounter will be played today, 5 January, at the Stade de Fes, with kick-off scheduled for 8:00 PM local time, which is 8:00 PM WAT (West Africa Time) and 7:00 PM GMT.

Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, are chasing a historic fourth continental crown, while Mozambique are enjoying a landmark moment after qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time in their AFCON history.
Head-to-Head Advantage for Nigeria
History strongly favours the Super Eagles heading into this clash. This will be only the second time Nigeria and Mozambique meet at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Their first AFCON meeting came during the 2010 tournament, where Nigeria delivered a convincing 3โ0 victory in the group stage. Peter Odemwingie starred with a brace, scoring in quick succession before Obafemi Martins sealed the win late in the game.
Across all competitions, both nations have faced each other five times, with Nigeria maintaining an unbeaten record โ four wins and one draw.
Past Competitive Battles
Nigeria and Mozambique also crossed paths during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which doubled as AFCON qualification matches. After a goalless draw in Maputo, Nigeria edged the return leg in Lagos 1โ0, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Victor Obinna. That win helped Nigeria book a ticket to the 2010 World Cup, while both teams also progressed to the AFCON finals that year.
Their most recent meeting was a friendly match in October 2023 in Albufeira, Portugal. Nigeria emerged victorious once again, winning 3โ2, with goals from Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka, and Moses Simon. Mozambique responded through Geny Catamo and Faisal, showing they can pose a real threat.
Whatโs at Stake Tonight
While Nigeria enter the contest as favourites on paper, Mozambiqueโs fearless run at AFCON 2025 suggests this could be far from straightforward. With momentum, confidence, and history on the line, tonightโs clash promises drama, intensity, and knockout football at its finest.
All eyes will be on Stade de Fes at 8:00 PM WAT as Nigeria aim to keep their AFCON dream alive.
