Nasir El-Rufai In EFCC Custody Over Alleged N432 Billion Fraud Probe

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged N432 billion fraud investigation.

According to sources within the anti graft agency, El-Rufai honoured an invitation from the commission on Monday and has since been undergoing interrogation. Although he reportedly presented himself voluntarily, he is yet to be granted bail as questioning continues into Tuesday.

The investigation is said to be connected to a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which examined financial activities carried out during El-Rufaiโ€™s tenure as governor between 2015 and 2023. The report allegedly raised concerns about the diversion of public funds through multiple state channels.

Sources familiar with the development say investigators are reviewing contracts, project allocations, and financial transactions executed during the former governorโ€™s eight year administration. The anti corruption agency is expected to scrutinise documentation tied to key infrastructure and public service projects undertaken within that period.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not issued an official public statement detailing specific charges. However, officials within the commission confirm that the investigation remains ongoing.

In a related development, the Department of State Services has reportedly filed a three count charge against El-Rufai at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charge is said to border on the alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. Details of the filing are still emerging, and court proceedings are expected to clarify the specifics of the allegations.

El-Rufai served as governor of Kaduna State for two terms, completing his tenure in 2023. Throughout his time in office, he was known for implementing reforms in sectors such as education, urban renewal, and civil service restructuring, though his administration also faced criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups.

Political observers say the latest development is likely to generate significant public interest given El-Rufaiโ€™s national profile and longstanding involvement in Nigeriaโ€™s political landscape.

His legal team has yet to release an official statement addressing the allegations or the ongoing interrogation. Meanwhile, the EFCC investigation continues as authorities examine documents and testimonies related to the case.
