Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has opened up about her private health battle, revealing that she has been living with more than 50 fibroids, with the largest about the size of an orange.
The Hollywood star made the emotional disclosure while speaking about women’s health and the need for more open conversations around reproductive conditions that often go undiagnosed or misunderstood.

According to her, discovering the extent of the fibroids was both shocking and overwhelming. She described the experience as a turning point that forced her to pay closer attention to her body and overall wellbeing.
“My biggest fibroid is the size of an orange,” she shared, highlighting just how severe the condition had become.
Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus and can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating and fertility challenges. Many women live with fibroids without realising it, while others endure symptoms silently due to stigma or lack of awareness.
Lupita’s revelation has sparked widespread conversations online, especially among women who say they have faced similar struggles. Many praised her for using her platform to speak openly about an issue that affects millions globally but is rarely discussed publicly.
The actress explained that she chose to speak up because women’s pain is often normalised or dismissed. By sharing her story, she hopes more women will seek medical advice early and advocate for their health without shame.
Her disclosure also reignited discussions about the disproportionate impact of fibroids on women of African descent, who studies show are more likely to develop the condition and experience more severe symptoms.
Following her announcement, fans and fellow celebrities flooded social media with messages of support. Many commended her vulnerability and courage, noting that public figures discussing personal health challenges can help break harmful silence.
Lupita, known for her powerful performances and advocacy work, has consistently used her voice to address issues ranging from representation in film to self acceptance. This latest revelation adds women’s reproductive health to the list of causes she is drawing attention to.
Medical experts have long encouraged routine gynecological checkups to detect fibroids early. Treatment options vary depending on severity and may include medication, minimally invasive procedures or surgery.
For many women watching her story unfold, Lupita’s openness serves as reassurance that they are not alone in their struggles.
Her message is clear: conversations about women’s health should not be whispered. They deserve attention, empathy and proper medical care.
