Mr Jollof Tells Nigerian Artistes to Review Fees Ahead of Detty December Festivities

As Lagos prepares for the much-anticipated Detty December season, comedian and media personality Mr Jollof has called out Nigerian artistes over what he describes as rising and unrealistic performance fees. In a post on his Instagram Story on Thursday, October 9, 2025, he urged artistes to lower their rates to help promoters and fans cope with economic pressures.

Mr Jollof pointed out that many Nigerians are already struggling under inflation, higher costs of living, and weaker purchasing power. He said these factors mean high booking fees may shut out many fans and reduce overall attendance at events. “If it continues, this festive season might not deliver the energy we all expect,” he wrote.

He specifically addressed promoters, artistes, and communities, asking them to be reasonable. According to Mr Jollof, high fees leave little justification when many people are trying to manage tight budgets. He warned that if fees keep increasing unchecked, some events might not take place or might fail to attract large crowds.

Reactions on social media have been mixed. Some users agree, noting that the cost of organising shows already eats into profit and that higher fees often mean ticket prices become too steep. Others argued artistes deserve high fees due to the investment in their craft, reputation, and the risk they take for big shows.

Detty December is a festive season in Lagos filled with concerts, comedy shows, events, and hospitality-industry surges. Many local and diaspora Nigerians plan to attend shows, making December one of the busiest months for nightlife and entertainment. The concern now is whether inflated performance rates will dampen the excitement.

Mr Jollof’s message comes at a critical time, when promoters are preparing budgets and negotiating with artistes for bookings. The call to adjust fees has opened discussions in entertainment circles about value, affordability, and sustaining audience engagement during the holiday season.
