Meta is testing a new WhatsApp username feature that will let users connect and chat without revealing their phone numbers. The feature, currently spotted in the Android beta version 2.25.28.12, is designed to give users more privacy and flexibility when interacting on the platform.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the test introduces a โreserve usernameโ option within profile settings, allowing users to create unique handles for identification. This means people can soon message others using usernames instead of mobile numbers.
Meta says the goal is to enhance privacy and reduce unwanted contact. The usernames are expected to follow simple rules as they may include letters, numbers, underscores, or periods, but cannot start or end with a period.
The company is also testing a PIN or Username Key feature to give users greater control over who can reach them. This feature could help prevent spam messages and improve security when chatting with new contacts.
Although Meta has not confirmed a rollout date, the username feature is expected to launch first for beta testers before expanding to more users. Once available globally, it could change how WhatsApp users connect, especially in groups, communities, and public chats without exposing their personal information.
The update follows other recent privacy-focused additions to WhatsApp, including chat lock, disappearing messages, and hidden online status, all aimed at giving users more control over their digital presence.
