Lagos State Warns Residents Against Scooping Fuel at Tincan-Liverpool Bridge

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to residents attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen diesel tanker at the Tincan-Liverpool Bridge, Apapa, following videos and images circulating earlier today showing people carrying basins to collect the spilled product.

The tanker had overturned on Monday morning, spilling diesel near Mile 2 and creating a highly flammable and dangerous situation. While emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were deployed immediately to secure the area, some members of the public reportedly tried to approach the spill, ignoring safety advisories.

In a statement signed by LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency cautioned residents against any attempt to collect fuel, stressing the extreme risk of explosions, fire outbreaks, and severe injuries.

Members of the public are urged to exercise EXTREME CAUTION to avoid any secondary incident from scooping product or lighting any flame near the area,” the statement read.

Authorities also warned motorists to avoid the Tincan-Liverpool Bridge axis until the tanker spill is fully contained and cleaned up, noting that traffic disruptions could continue for several hours.

This warning comes after video footage and photographs emerged online, showing people approaching the spill with containers, despite the ongoing presence of emergency personnel. LASEMA emphasized that fuel scooping in such situations is illegal, extremely hazardous, and could have life-threatening consequences.

The agency reassured residents that the tanker and spill are being managed by trained emergency teams equipped to prevent fires and control hazards, and urged the public to allow professionals to handle the situation.

Residents have been advised to steer clear of the site, report any unauthorized attempts to scoop fuel, and follow official updates from LASEMA and the Lagos State Government for safety instructions.

Some Nigerians have said that the perpetrators should be arrested and not warned as issues concerning scooping and stealing fuel during spillage or accidents like these have become very rampant.
