According to a statement from the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the project will run from November 15, 2025, to July 15, 2026. The repairs are aimed at reducing long-standing traffic congestion and improving safety for the thousands of commuters who rely on the busy expressway daily.

Osiyemi explained that the project will be carried out in two key phases to minimize disruption and ensure continuous movement along the route.

Phased rehabilitation and traffic management plan

In the first phase, specific sections of one lane will be closed for repairs, while the opposite lane remains open to vehicles heading toward Lekki and Ajah. This approach, the commissioner noted, will allow work to progress steadily without completely shutting down the corridor.

During the second phase, traffic from Ajah to Lekki will be diverted to one lane while the other lane undergoes construction. The state government has assured that traffic personnel and signs will be strategically positioned along the route to guide motorists safely through the diversions.

“We appeal to all road users to cooperate with our traffic officers and comply with diversion instructions. These efforts are part of our broader plan to ensure safer and more efficient road travel across Lagos,” Osiyemi stated.

He also emphasized that the project aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development and smoother urban mobility.

The Lekki–Ajah expressway serves as a major link connecting the Lekki Peninsula with Victoria Island and Epe, carrying both residential and commercial traffic daily. Over the years, the route has experienced heavy congestion and surface deterioration due to rapid urban expansion and increased vehicular pressure.

Osiyemi added that the new rehabilitation project will introduce improved road surfacing, drainage systems, and better pedestrian safety features once completed.

Government assures minimal disruption

To ensure minimal disruption to economic activities, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy additional officers to manage peak-hour traffic and assist with the new diversions. Road signage, lighting, and lane markings will also be improved to enhance safety during construction.

The Ministry of Transportation has also announced plans for public awareness campaigns across media platforms to keep commuters informed about ongoing works and alternative routes.

“Our goal is not only to fix the road but to make it more durable, safer, and accessible for all users,” Osiyemi noted. “We recognize the inconvenience this may cause, but the long-term benefits will be worth the patience.”

Residents and business owners along the corridor have been urged to plan their movements ahead of time and use designated access routes during the period of partial closure.

As part of Lagos’s broader infrastructure renewal drive, similar upgrades are ongoing in other parts of the city, including Ikeja, Surulere, and Yaba, under the state’s Transportation Master Plan.

Upon completion, the newly upgraded Lekki–Ajah corridor is expected to improve travel time, reduce flooding, and enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
