The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially launched the much-anticipated Omi Eko Project, a landmark €410 million initiative aimed at transforming water transportation across the state. The unveiling took place on Monday, October 20, 2025, marking a major milestone in the governor’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and infrastructural renewal under the “Greater Lagos Rising” agenda.

Implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the Omi Eko Project is backed by the European Union through the Global Gateway Initiative, with additional support from the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The six-year project is designed to decongest Lagos roads, create jobs, and position the state as a model for green transport innovation in Africa.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the project as a game-changer for Lagos, highlighting that it will introduce 78 new high-capacity electric ferries with capacities ranging between 50 and 200 passengers. The initiative also includes the construction of new floating jetties and modern terminals, the rehabilitation of existing ones, and the dredging of about 140 kilometers of waterways covering 15 key routes across the state.

In addition to physical infrastructure, the Omi Eko Project will integrate smart technology into the daily commuting experience. A digital ticketing platform and smart terminals will make boarding faster and more convenient, while advanced safety systems and LASWA oversight will ensure secure, efficient operations.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Sanwo-Olu said, “This project is a reflection of our commitment to a cleaner, smarter, and more connected Lagos. Omi Eko will redefine how people move around the state, reduce travel time, and strengthen our economy through reliable water transport.” He added that the initiative also supports Lagos’s climate goals by cutting carbon emissions through the introduction of electric-powered ferries.
Representatives of the European Union and development partners present at the event praised Lagos State for its leadership and long-term planning in building sustainable transport systems. They reaffirmed their support for the full implementation of the Omi Eko Project through to its completion in 2031.
With the official launch now underway, construction and deployment will begin immediately across selected routes, including Ikorodu, Victoria Island, Marina, and Badore. Residents are optimistic that the new project will provide an efficient alternative to road transport and enhance connectivity across Lagos’s coastal communities.
