A Senior Official of the North Korea’s ruling party has refuted claims by a News agency that the ruler of North Korea, Kim Jong-un is dead.
In an Official statement, he said โWe cannot verify the credentials of this news agency,โ the official who spoke under the condition of anonymity said, โIt looks like just a petty move to capture the publicโs attention.โ
The official was referring to the East Asia Tribune article entitled โNorth Korean Leader Kim Jong-un Dead After Apparent Suicide Attack,โ in which the leader was said to have been killed in an apparent suicide bombing carried out by a woman during a ceremony Pyongyang.
The report said the woman had broken through a security cordon and detonated the bomb.
โMr Kimโs bodyguards drew their weapons, but before they had a chance to fire upon the female, she detonated a device which is believed to be a suicide belt,โ the satire site reported, adding Kim was โpronounced deadโ upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
An official from the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, who also spoke on condition on anonymity, said the ministry attempted to verify the report.
โAs far as we know, it is not true.โ
Another source told JoongAng daily that Kim was alive and healthy, adding South Korean intelligence would have known about the incident if it had happened.
Kim Jong-un is the Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea and supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly referred to as North Korea.
Kim is the third and youngest son of Kim Jong-il (1941โ2011) and his consort Ko Yong-hui. Little is known for certain about Kim Jong-un. Before taking power, Kim had barely been seen in public, and many of the activities of both Kim and his government remain shrouded in secrecy. Even details such as what year he was born, and whether he did indeed attend a Western school under a pseudonym, are difficult to confirm with certainty.
