IKEDC Warns Customers To Submit Tax Identification Details By Feb 20 To Avoid Service Suspension

The Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) has issued an important notice to its electricity customers, urging them to submit valid tax identification details by February 20, 2026 or risk having their service disrupted. The directive comes as part of a broader effort to comply with the newly enacted Nigeria Tax Act (2025), which took effect on January 1, 2026, and introduced fresh requirements for how businesses issue invoices, including utility bills.

In a public statement released on Wednesday, Ikeja Electric explained that the new law mandates all invoices including electricity bills must contain at least one approved form of identification before they are considered valid under Nigerian tax regulations. Acceptable forms of identification include a Tax Identification Number (TIN), National Identification Number (NIN) for individuals, or a Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number for businesses.ย

Customers who fail to provide any of these identification details by the February 20 deadline may face the inability to receive future electricity bills, which could lead to a suspension of their electricity service after that date. The company emphasised that invoices without the required identification details are considered invalid according to the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Act.

Under the new tax regulation, the inclusion of tax identification details on utility bills is designed to improve documentation, enhance traceability of economic transactions, and support the federal governmentโ€™s efforts to strengthen tax compliance. For years, authorities have sought additional ways to expand the tax base and ensure accurate tax reporting across sectors of the economy. Analysts say updating billing data to include identification information aligns utility providers with modern tax administration practices.

Ikeja Electric, one of Nigeriaโ€™s largest electricity distribution companies, serves millions of customers across Lagos and surrounding areas. The company has provided customers with designated submission forms and channels to update their identification details and comply with the new rule before the set deadline.

The requirement has raised conversations among residential and business customers alike, with some expressing concern about meeting the deadline, especially those who may not have readily available TINs or CAC registration numbers. While many urban consumers have National Identification Numbers due to ongoing national ID programmes, securing a TIN remains a more complex process for some individuals and small business owners in Nigeria.

In its notice, IKEDC thanked customers for their cooperation and urged prompt compliance to ensure uninterrupted billing and service delivery. The company has also emphasised that the directive is not arbitrary but a statutory obligation under the Nigeria Tax Act, and that compliance will help streamline billing processes in line with federal tax law.

For customers across the IKEDC service area โ€” which includes major parts of Lagos State โ€” acting quickly to update their records before the February 20 deadline will be essential to avoid potential disruption of electricity supply or interruptions in billing services.
