Google Report Reveals Nigeria Is Emerging as a Global Leader in AI Adoption

A new report by Google has revealed that Nigeria is fast emerging as a global leader in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly across learning, work, and entrepreneurship.

The report, developed in partnership with Ipsos and titled โ€œOur Life with AI: Helpfulness in the Hands of More People,โ€ highlights how rapidly Nigerians are embracing AI tools and the strong optimism surrounding their use.

Released this week, the findings show that AI is no longer a futuristic concept in Nigeria but a practical tool already shaping everyday life. According to the report, 88 percent of Nigerian adults have used an AI chatbot, marking an 18-percentage-point increase from 2024.

This figure is significantly higher than the global average of 62 percent, positioning Nigeria among the most active users of AI technology worldwide.

One of the most striking insights from the report is AIโ€™s growing role in education and learning. About 93 percent of Nigerian users said they rely on AI tools to understand complex topics, compared to a global average of 74 percent. This suggests that AI is becoming a key learning companion for students, professionals, and self-learners in Nigeria, especially in a country where access to quality educational resources can be uneven.

The workplace has also seen rapid integration of AI tools. According to the report, 91 percent of Nigerians use AI to assist with work-related tasks, indicating that professionals and businesses are increasingly leveraging technology to improve productivity, problem-solving, and efficiency. From content creation to research and automation, AI is steadily becoming part of daily work routines.

Perhaps most notable is the strong link between AI adoption and entrepreneurship. The report found that 80 percent of Nigerians use AI tools to explore new business ideas or consider career changes, nearly double the global average of 42 percent. This highlights how AI is empowering Nigerians to innovate, experiment, and create opportunities in a digital-first economy where self-employment and side hustles are on the rise.

Commenting on the findings, Googleโ€™s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, described the results as a reflection of Nigeriansโ€™ creativity and resilience. He noted that the report goes beyond adoption statistics to tell the story of a country actively shaping its future through technology, using AI as a tool for growth, learning, and economic empowerment.

Overall, the report paints a clear picture of Nigeria as a nation not just consuming technology, but embracing AI with purpose. AI is set to play an even greater role in transforming education, work, and entrepreneurship across the country as its adoption rises.
