Google Play Movies now available in South Africa; to compete with Netflix and Showmax

Google has added South Africa to the list of 103 countries where you can purchase or rent movies from Google Play Store. Users can download movies to watch offline at a later stage or stream them from within the Google Play Movies and TV app.

Interestingly, this means Google will be competing with other Video on demand service providers Showmax and Netflix in South Africa.

Google says they have some fantastic films to entertain subscribers through the upcoming months, including blockbusters like Mad Max: Fury Road and classic films like Cleopatra. They also hope to add some local titles soon.

You can watch movies on Google Play in a variety of ways:

Android devices – On your Android phone and tablet, open the Play Store to shop for movies. Movies can be streamed immediately in the Play Movies app, or downloaded for viewing without a data connection;

iOS devices – On your iPhone and iPad, download the Google Play Movies app from the Apple App Store. Movies you’ve purchased on Google Play (play.google.com) are available immediately to stream or download in the Play Movies app.

On the web – On your computer, buy and watch movies on the Google Play Store website (play.google.com/)

On your TV – You can also watch movies on your Android TV, Chromecast, or (coming soon) LG Smart TV.

According to Innovation-Village, movies are available for rent and purchase at competitive pricing starting at R19.99. For most movies, you’ll have 30 days to begin watching your rental, and, once you start watching, you have 48 hours to finish.
