Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed that the success of her latest film, Behind The Scenes, came with major personal sacrifices. The movie grossed ₦2.7 billion at the Nigerian box office, making it one of the industry’s biggest hits.
During an interview with Bella Naija, Akindele said reaching that milestone required months of hard work and commitment.
Sleepless nights and missed meals
Looking back on the experience, the filmmaker said the project demanded her full attention.
“For the last movie to cross ₦2.7 billion, it was a lot of sleepless nights for me. A lot of sacrifice, giving my all. I forget to eat sometimes,” she said.
She explained that the demands of the production often left little room for rest or regular self-care.
Personal life put on hold
Beyond the long working hours, Akindele said she stayed away from many social activities while working on the film. Most of her time, she noted, went into research, writing and production.
“I abandoned myself for work. I don’t even make my hair, except I’m going on the red carpet or for something very important. I don’t attend parties. I don’t go to greet people at home. I put everything into work, research, writing, work. I’m neck deep into work,” she said.
Those comments have sparked discussions about the sacrifices often required to achieve success in the entertainment industry.
Finding time for herself again
With the film’s successful run now behind her, the actress said she has started paying more attention to her personal well-being.
“It’s just now that I’m relaxed, feeling fresh, doing the skincare routine, looking beautiful, smelling nice,” she said.
After the interview resurfaced on X on Monday, many users praised her dedication and discipline. Others said her remarks offered a rare look at the hard work behind major achievements.
The success of Behind The Scenes adds to Akindele’s growing list of box office records. In 2023, her film A Tribe Called Judah earned more than ₦1 billion. Meanwhile, the Omo Ghetto franchise remains one of Nollywood’s most successful film series.
