The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, undertook an emergency visit to Lagos State on Monday night following a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The incident, which occurred at the domestic wing of the airport, immediately triggered safety protocols and drew the attention of aviation authorities. Emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the fire and prevent further damage.

In a statement released shortly after his visit, Keyamo confirmed that he was on ground to assess the situation firsthand and ensure that necessary measures were taken to safeguard passengers, airport staff and infrastructure.

According to preliminary reports, the fire was quickly brought under control, with no confirmed casualties at the time of filing this report. Airport authorities assured the public that operations were being carefully reviewed to determine the extent of the damage and any potential impact on flight schedules.

The minister commended the rapid response of fire service officials and airport emergency teams, noting that their swift action helped prevent the situation from escalating.

Sources within the aviation sector indicated that parts of the affected terminal were temporarily restricted while technical assessments were carried out. Engineers and safety officers were said to be evaluating electrical systems and structural components to determine the cause of the blaze.

Passengers present at the airport during the incident described moments of concern before order was restored. Some flights reportedly experienced minor delays as a precautionary measure, though airport management worked to minimise disruption.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is expected to release a detailed report once investigations are concluded. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and rely on verified updates rather than speculation circulating online.

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport remains one of Nigeriaโ€™s busiest aviation hubs, handling both domestic and international traffic daily. Incidents of this nature often prompt renewed conversations about infrastructure maintenance and safety standards within the aviation industry.

While investigations continue, officials maintain that the situation is under control and that passenger safety remains the top priority.
